So... I was looking at this weeks chapters in the text, as well as reading the material posted in blackboard. I have always been fascinated by nutrition, but sadly... never paid too much attention to it. When I looked at the wrapped of my "Chewy" granola bar, I began to become uneasy about what I was putting in my body. As I read the wrapper, I began trying to figure out how to pronounce the words (scary). I really liked the rule that Professor Martinez gave in class... "If you can't pronounce, don't eat it!"
I believe it is essential for companies to begin putting the transfat contents on the wrappers of their products as the health issues are becoming more adherent in today's society. As we learn in reading the text that transfats are some of the worst fats one can intake. I think I am going to have to start looking more closely at the wrappers of the prodcuts I consume.... These are some of my thoughts, what are yours?

I have had a very hard time finding a granola bar that has a natural ingredients and is actually good for you. I used to give my son the "chewy" granola bars you mentioned until I really looked at the label. I no longer give him any granola bars since they all have ingredients that are made in the lab.
ReplyDeleteI also found it interesting that you should be able to pronounce the ingredients but I was very surprised when Shawna Martinez told us a 5 year old should be able to pronounce it. That really hit home for me.
I also think that is a good rule of thumb. If we cannot pronounce it, don't eat it. There are many foods without trans fats to choose from. The reason we partially eat the way we do is because of thrift. I know I would rather eat something that is quick and cheap but what I want to start thinking about is my body as an investment. The college life is rough in this dept. so I completely understand; but what we're choosing to do is really invest in our future. What better time than now?
ReplyDeleteI think that it was an important step for the FDA to start requiring the nutritional labels to list out the types of fats, including trans fats. I do not think that I ever knew about tans fats until the past couple of years. Some states have banned the use of trans fats in restaurants and fast food chains, passed here in California last summer!

I do like Professor Martinez's idea of pronunciation too. The only problem is sometimes natural things have really weird names. Haha. More likely than not, it is a chemical though. We all should be sure to look after not only trans fat consumption, but most of the problem is our serving sizes. A lot of people think if they cut out just the bad food they can eat as much as they want. It helps but is not true at all.
